Tooltips
Table of Contents
Tooltips are a new way to guide users through key features in the app by surfacing short, contextual hints at just the right time. This feature is designed to support both new and existing users in discovering functionality they may not otherwise notice.
Tooltips help drive feature adoption by increasing visibility and understanding of features such as Follow and Enhanced PDF. Some features can be easily missed, especially when users skip onboarding or when new features are added after a user has already become active. Tooltips offer a subtle but effective way to highlight useful tools without interrupting the flow. They’re particularly helpful for complex features or secondary interactions hidden behind icons or gestures. By presenting short focused messages when users are most likely to need them, we aim to improve overall engagement and reduce friction in the user experience.
What are Tooltips?
Tooltips are short, in-app messages that appear contextually to highlight specific features. They’re designed to appear:
- For new users - immediately after onboarding or when they encounter a feature for the first time.
- For existing users - when a new feature is introduced, or when a previously unused feature becomes relevant to their current action.
Each tooltip includes a title and body copy, and appears in a modal format with a dismiss button. They only appear when relevant, and always one at a time, so if multiple tips are scheduled, they’ll appear in order as the user dismisses them.
Tooltips are paused if another modal (like a login screen or onboarding message) is already active, and will appear once it’s dismissed.
Where can they appear?
Currently tooltips are supported on:
App elements
- Any tab
- Any toolbar icon
App features
- Enhanced PDFs, including hotspots and thumbnails
- The PDF scrubber
- Follow

- Driving adoption of high-value features like Follow

What is needed to get it live?
To enable tooltips you'll need some server side configuration via our Support team and an app update to Bolt iOS 4.8.0.
