General Tags Video Card Audio Card Header Card Content still to be added

We support one card type per RSS feed, so if you'd like to include videos via an RSS feed, then we will require a separate feed for just Video cards. For Article cards and general RSS guidance, please see our Example RSS Feed.

Unlike article cards, the cards below do not need any content. These cards are only available from the timeline. If you'd like to be able to tap into cards, eg. for a podcast or a video, then you will need to use an Article card, not the Video/Audio cards below.

We will only require an RSS feed for the below card types if they need to be ingested into our CMS. If you are using a curator which contains Header cards, for example, these will not need to be contained in an RSS feed. In most cases we will only require Video or Audio card feeds.

Note: “pp” is used as an example namespace here, but the <element> tag names can generally be changed to whatever is preferred, as long as the namespacing is valid.

              General Tags

These should be included on every article:

              • The GUID. This must be unique for each item in our CMS eg.
.
              • The published date. This determines when an article is published eg.
.
              • The updated (or modified) date. This indicates when an article was last updated in the feed. We use this to determine whether an article should be updated in our CMS eg.
or <dcterms:modified>Tue, 23 Jul 2024 09:59:16 +0100</dcterms:modified>.

If you use a hash to check whether a card should be updated, these should be included on every article. This will be the same as your Article card feed:

              • The hash eg. <hash>24397955df707by787fddff5d04essd408a4260</hash>.

These may also optionally be used on every card:

              • One or more timeline tag(s) eg.
Podcasts
. These indicate what timeline(s) the card should appear on. This tag is not visible in the app.
              • A section eg. <pp:section>The Pugpig Podcast</pp:section>. This can be used as a kicker on most cards, as well as for dynamic timelines and our follow page (Note: only cards which can be saved can be used for this eg. Video, Audio cards).
              • The rank eg. <pp:rank>43</pp:rank>. This can be used to order cards on a timeline.

              Video Card

These tags should be included for a video card feed:

              • A title eg.
Podcast #124
.
              • An external video link eg. <pp:video_url>https://video-provider-website.com/video/6273514.mp4</pp:audio_url>. This would usually be an mp3 file.
              • (required for multiple providers) The provider to be displayed on the card eg. <pp:provider>jwplayer</pp:provider>
              • (required for multiple orientations) The orientation of the video card. Can be either “portrait” or “landscape”. eg. <pp:orientation>portrait</pp:orientation>.
              • (recommended) <pp:main_image> A placeholder image for the card.
              • (optional) A summary to be displayed on the card eg.
The 124th episode of our podcast.

              • (optional) <pp:kicker> A kicker displayed above the title on the card. This will default to the section of the card.

              Audio Card

These tags should be included for an audio card feed:

              • A title eg.
Podcast #124
.
              • An external audio link eg. <pp:audio_url>https://audio-provider-website.com/audio/6273514.mp3</pp:audio_url>. This would usually be an mp3 file.
              • (optional) A summary to be displayed on the card eg.
The 124th episode of our podcast.

              • (optional) <pp:main_image> A main image for the card
              • (optional) <pp:kicker> A kicker displayed above the title on the card. This will default to the section of the card.
              • (optional) <pp:audio_duration> The duration of the audio which can be displayed on the card.

              Header Card

These tags should be included for a header card feed:

              • A title eg.
Podcasts
.
              • A summary eg.

Listen to our weekly science and technology round-up show, as well as your other favourite New Scientist podcasts

.
              • (optional) A link eg.
. These can be in-app links (such as /t/video/podcasts) or external links.

              Content still to be added

Please ask for an explanation of these feeds if they are needed for your app:

              • External Link Card
              • Image Card
              • Event Card
