Responsive feedback in Bolt
Table of Contents
We want Bolt apps to feel as responsive and intuitive as possible to users. Performing actions within the app should feel as seamless and familiar as the most popular apps on the market. Instant yet subtle feedback helps users feel confident that their actions have been recognised, reducing any potential uncertainty and improving overall user experience.
In an effort to address this, we’re adding better feedback signals inside the app.. We have added haptic feedback to certain actions, and will soon be introducing toast messaging for clearer visual confirmation as well.
Haptic feedback
Haptic feedback provides a subtle physical response, a small vibration, when users perform key actions in the app. This response reinforces that an action has been successfully triggered, without interrupting the user’s flow. Our aim with haptics is to provide confirmation without distraction. It is used only for meaningful actions, not routine taps, and follows native standards on iOS and Android to maintain consistency with platform behaviour, meaning it will only be present if the user has haptics switched on in their device's system settings.
We currently use haptic feedback for:
- Pull-to-refresh on the timeline
- Text resize in settings
- Edit timelines in settings
- Saving and unsaving content
- Following and unfollowing topics or authors
- Toggling preferences in the push preference centre
- Downloading and deleting editions in the storefront
Toast messaging (coming soon)
Toast messages are brief non-intrusive pop-up notifications that appear temporarily at the bottom of the screen. They visually confirm that an action has been completed, or provide minor updates without requiring user interaction.
We plan to use toast messaging for:
- Confirming that content has been saved
- Confirming that audio has been added to queue
- More tbc
