You can publish your content to Apple News + in an edition or through a feed. To publish to Apple News +, you will need an Apple News + account that is purchased through Apple.
Steps to publish content as an edition
- Create the edition. Mark the edition as draft/pending. If you publish Apple News article when an edition is already published then the articles will not be marked as draft in Apple News.
- Tag content into the edition. Note: articles need to be published in order for you to publish them in Apple News but if they're inside a draft edition then they won't go live.
- Check the articles have been added into the edition, if yes then proceed to next step.
- Go to Apple News > Articles to publish articles. You can do this individually or in bulk depending on template selection.
- Once articles have successfully published, go to icloud.com. You'll then see your articles have been published as draft (if you did the first step correctly) however you'll want to turn these into an edition now.
- Go to the Issue tab and click 'create issue'. You can then select your issue identifier from the list. It will use the edition key from the CMS so if you don't see it try searching.
- You should see all your articles pulled into your Apple News edition in the same order as they appear in the CMS flatplan. All articles should be marked as draft at this stage.
- Fill in details about the issue and check the draft articles.
- Once you are happy with content, adverts and order you can publish the issue.
Publishing RSS content to Apple News +
You can use an RSS feed to send content to Apple News +. You do not need to set up your content into editions to publish in AN+.
To do this you'll need:
- An RSS feed for articles
- If you choose, an RSS feed for edition metadata (the editions must be marked as draft to allow for manual intervention)

The publishing process for automatic RSS content for Apple News +
There are a few considerations you will need to plan for when publishing RSS content to AN+.
- Filtering: You can set up filtering on your RSS feed to remove any content you do not want to publish in AN+ (e.g.: wire content). A simple tag in your RSS feed (and letting Pugpig know what the appropriate mapping and expectations are) should take care of this for you.
- Authors: AN+ doesn't use our contributor tag, which will cause author bylines to pull in blank. But we can use rss_author in your AN+ feed to add an author. You just need to let us know this is OK to do for your channel.
- Paywall: Your content can be paywalled on AN+. If you want to paywall all content, Pugpig can add the paywall for you. If you want to paywall select content then you will need to set up a tag in the RSS feed and let Pugpig know what the appropriate mapping and expectations are. You also do not have to add an additional paywall to your Apple News + content.
- Styling: Once your content is available in your channel, you should be able to see the content styling. It is important that you style your content to match (as close as possible) your website branding. You can follow Apple's documentation here. Apple will not approve you channel for public viewing until the content is styled. This can be done via you Apple News plug-in in Express.
- Canonical Linking: You need to send your canonical linking metadata through to Apple. Please make sure you have canonical linking set up for your app.
- Sectioning Content: You need to split your content into sections. Generally, these are the different news verticals on your site (Politics, Culture, Food, etc.) You can set these up via an automation in the Apple News plug-in in Express. A Pugpig dev can also set this up for you, if you'd prefer.
After your content has started pulling through and the styling has been applied, Apple will review your channel for approval. During this time, you will be able to view your content in the channel, but it will not be searchable by the public.
Apple releases new news channels at the end of each month.
It is probably easiest if you can give your CSM access to your News Publisher account. Other people may also need access (like a dev or engineer) as the channel is set up.
